Description: Grüner Veltliner (say GREWnehr felt-LEE-nehr, or just Gru-vee), Austria’s signature white, is especially good from the Kamptal region. Look for lively minerals on the nose (you can’t smell rocks? Think club soda), plus grapefruit, pineapple and a sprinkle of white pepper—all wrapped up in a tart, dry, refreshing finish.

Food pairing: Southern-fried anything, like chicken, fish or hush puppies. Also salads and lean meat.
